Payment policies out of whack!

My husband attempted to cancel MCI on Dec 8. They said we're all set and then we get a final bill to pay because we didn't designate another carrier to the phone company. No problem. We have every intention to pay the final bill which was under $20. Because service was ongoing due to the error of not designating a new carrier we continued to incur charges through January 9th. On January 27th MCI sends a final notice for charges after we cancelled and then February 5th another bill with the balance carried over and a current charge added on. Both we intended to pay.

I get a call from NCO, a collections agency out of Columbus on February 19th and return the call the 20th. This prompts me to call MCI to determine why we are in collections. The Feb 5th bill has a pay date of February 26th. I spoke with Catalina in the customer service department (I believe that was her name). She tells me a block has been put on our account, but can't tell me why. I ask what MCI's billing policy is and she can't tell me either. I explain that we got a final statement on January 27th and asked how much time you have to pay from a final statement. She says 30 days. I tell her it's February 20th and she seems confused now. She then acknowledges that this should not have gone to collections and seems to be an error, but then says she is sorry there is nothing they can do once an account goes to collections. I press her further and ask her to have someone at the company contact the collections agency and tell them there was an error. She says they cannot do that. When pressed she puts me on hold to talk to her supervisor. She comes back and says she's sorry there is nothing they can do. I ask if she spoke with anyone and she said she looked something up on the computer. I ask for her supervisor and she sends me to "Dwan" in the "escalations department". He tells me that they do not speak to the collections agency, all of their billing policies/payment cycles are "in their computer" and cannot be altered and that it doesn't matter what his opinion is, I will just be transferred back and forth between the finance and customer service departments (his own words). I tell Dwan that there is also an $11 current charge that was sent to collections with the balance due from January. He said that all charges are bundled together and sent to collections. I asked him about the final statement date and why we weren't given 30 days to pay. He explains nonsensically that they can send the account to collections any time within the 30 days it is sent out. That means they can send the statement on Jan 27th and send my account to collections the next day??? Nobody at this company seems to know what their pay periods are, why my account has a "block" put on it, or why current charges can be sent to a collections agency, nor do they care.

I will be contacting the attorney general regarding this. These people are apathetic pawns of the biggest corporate bullying scandal that needs to be put before Congress. Time to bring these companies back to reality.
