On March 18, I wrote a check to pay for tires I purchased. I was told by the manager that my check was not approved and to call Telecheck. I knew I didn't have negative information in their system and couldn't imagine why my check was not accepted. I called the number and was told that my check did not meet the Telecheck requirements. I asked what the requirements were and was told that because of security reasons I could not get that information over the phone. I would have to write a letter to find out why, but I was assured that I did not have negative information in their system.
I was also told that Telecheck approvals are computer generated, and at any time for any reason other than negative information in their system, my check could be declined at a merchant who uses Telecheck and there is nothing I can do.
They won't give me the requirements so I can avoid this happening again, because the computer generates the approval code. I am furious. I had my purse stolen and avoid carrying cash, credit & debit cards unless I have to. It's my money in the bank and I should be able to use it the way I choose without the embarassment of being told "I'm sorry, your check is declined". If this has never happened to you, you can't relate. But, if it has, you know it's a true embarassment.
You want to crawl under a rock and hide from the people standing in line behind you thinking "oh he/she is trying to write a bad check". I understand why merchants use such systems. There are people out there that write bad checks, but I'm not one of them. No system catches every thief, but I should not be treated like one. There has to be something that can be done. I'm scared to carry cash and cards and now I'm scared to write a check. Can anyone help? Where can I start to stop this injustice?
