Beware of this scam that is starting to circulate! It is a mystery shopping scam. I got a check in the mail the other day for $4996. The envelope came from Canada with no return address. My name was hand written (in rather unreadable writing I might add).inside the envelope was a cashier's check and a page with instructions on what I needed to do to earn MY share of the money.
Check this out for starters. The envelope was postmarked from Canada, The company was supposedly in South Dakota, and the cashiers check was from South Carolina. Kinda hard to track all that down like that!
Out of this $5000 check I was to earn a measly $300 for my deeds. The tasks I had to complete were, 1) to spend $500 at Wal-Mart. 2) spend $40 at the Gap. 3) Send BACK TO THEM a Western Union money order for $1612 & pay a $99 fee. 4) Make a Moneygram transfer BACK TO THEM for $2835 with a $60 fee. That comes to a total of $4996.
The check came from a bank in Charleston S.C. Called Harbor National Bank. I actually called the bank to check on this and they told me it was a scam & that I was not to cash or try to deposit the check. They emailed me today and said they have alerted the authorities abouth the scam.
I also did a search online for this company, and as you can imagine, it didn't exist. The address to the company is legit, but nothing in the suite # came up in the search.
So just beware of this if it comes to your mailbox. Who is going to just send you $5000 out of the blue and ask you to do all this. I'll bet at least half of the people they would send it to would take the $ and run! I would be one of them probably! (at least I'm honest)
