Following college graduation, accepted a written job offer and checked with several moving companies. I finalized a date for my move and my landlord decided to move it ahead two weeks, which created a larger problem since my apartment would not be available that early.
Received a quote for $1600 for 600 cubic feet, less "discount." I had checked with other companies and everyone agreed on essentially same price, $2,400. This included what was to be packed by me, by them, and not unpacking dressers (removing and replacing drawers only). Also included was some medical assistance equipment I was not able to transport in my car that my handicapped mother uses.
The quote was arrrived at through emails with "Sally, " which I still have copies of.
On day of move, the movers unpacked the dressers, boxed everything they took out of them and miraculously found 550 more c.F. (all boxes containing contents of what was told could be left alone by them, as well as other moving companies I checked with). That plus all the stuff they used to pack that was in the drawers added $5,880 to the grand total.
Naturally, I questioned why they were packing more than I was told would be done, they said everything was supposed to be packed.
I couldn't pay half of the bill, which was now at $7,000, since had only enough cash to cover the full original estimate, less $200 deposit. Paid total of $1100 and would owe $500 when delivered, according to original estimate that was arrived at through emails (still have copies) of inventory list and follow-up phone calls with "Sally."
Any attempt I made in the following few days to try and pay something and make up the difference was met with an "all or nothing" answer.
On Dateline the other night, they said the only thing that the law stated was that you could not be charged more than 110% of original estimate, if I remember the percentage correctly. Going from 1600 to 7000 is more than 110%.
Since my move, I lost my job and only have a part-time income to keep paying this bill, as well as living expenses. I have contacted them and attempted to work out something when I get some money. Not surprisingly, they did not seem to know where I had moved to. I have copies of a packing list with that information.
I was told two weeks ago I would receive an "updated" bill. That has not materialized; however, phone calls demanding money have come in its place.
