Received a letter in the mail no return address, to my surprise I opened and found a check in the amount of $ 4999.42. This appeared to be a legitimate check. The letter that was with the check says " I am entitle to $ 150,000.00 US dollars. This is from a total of $ 1.5 million US dollars. It also states that they attempted several times to contact me. They asked that I pay a Government tax $ 2,998.00 by Western Union or Money Gram. The gave me a tax agent Oscar Williams 1-416-875-6150. No one answered and was unable to leave a message.
I did an online search and found this website. Which thank goodness I did my own investigation there were so many red lights on this for expample.
1. Envelope had no return address (what if the check needed to be returned?)
2. Why would you pay their Government tax and not your own Government?
3. Called the issuing bank to verify account. Surprise, Surprise account does not exist... (didn't see that coming.)
Here is where these scammers get away with this. Once you deposit the check it can take 5-10 business day for your bank to verify. Depending on your standing with your bank they may release funds to you right away and you might at this point think wow free money (believe me nothing is free). Even if you won the Lotto you still had to buy a ticket.
What the tax agent " Oscar" does is tell you to immediately send the tax money via western union in doing this you just lost $ 2998.00 of your LEGITIMATE MONEY. Then you see that the bank was returned for NSF and now you are out of $ 2998.00 an who knows what else if you decided to go on a shopping spree...
Please note that I also went to to verify the routing# to see if it was legitimate and to my surprise they said it was. It may be a legitmate routing number but not at the bank where they say it is. Beware, call, call, call the BANK... Thank heavens I did not fall for this.
