One day, we received a phone call saying that we had won a free cell phone. They asked how present service was and my husband made the mistake of saying we were not happy with it.
Worldcom said we had won a free phone and they would send it to us. My husband said no, we did not want it.
A few weeks later, we found in our front door to our house, that we do not use very often, a package from worldcom. We are not sure how long it was in the door, we suspect maybe a week. We had been gone for a few days.
When we say what is was, my Husband sent it back.
Approximately 45 days later we received a bill in the mail for monthly services on the phone. We never activated the phone, we never chose the type of service that we wanted. We figured that the phone and the bill had crossed in the mail. A month later were received another bill, this time for 2 months of service plus past due. We called them, told them the phone was returned, gave them the tracking number and they said they would adjust the bill.
4 months after that were received calls from a collection agency in Florida, 6 calls in one day, collecting on the past due bill that had now amounted to over $400.00. When we questioned worldcom on why the bill was still out there, they said we had to return the phone within 15 days, and since we did not take the service we were then charged $200.00 for breaking the contract.
We never signed for the phone when it was delivered by Speedy Delivery, we never signed a contract for the phone and we never activated the phone by calling into the company to activate the phone.
We have turned this matter over to an attorney. We have not received a bill in over 5 months, and now the calls have started again. The present balance is almost $500.00.
Our attorney is working on this matter for us, possible looking into a class action suite against Worldcom. Isn't it funny that the week before the collection company called it was made public that they were in LOTS of financial trouble!!!
