I just have to express my opinion as to why I no longer have my baby Joey. I lost my precious baby Joey on June 5. While under Douglas Brighton's "care". Joey was an adorable 5lb. Yorkshire Terrier who was only 1 1/2 years old. Unfortunately he had a condition called Legg Calve Perthes in his left hip.
I scheduled the procedure for Tuesday June 3. At Brannan Vet. Clinic in Maumee, Ohio. Joey was released to me that evening with only some pain meds. The following day I called and expressed my concerns about hypoglycemia because Joey was not eating or drinking anything. I was administering the pain meds and water by syringe to him.
I took him back in the next day, Wednesday, to be checked out. Brighton said everything appeared normal and to continue to monitor him. He gave him fluids just to be on the safe side since I was concerned with him not drinking.
The next day, Thursday, the 6th. Of June, Joey was still no better. I called Brighton again around 6P.M. And expressed my concerns that Joey seemed to be swollen on his inner thigh and he had a deep rasberry red mark the size of a small egg on his lower belly. Without even looking at it Brighton reassured me it was perfecly normal and it was all from the surgery. He did this diagnosis over the phone, he never expressed a concern to bring him in for a visual exam.
Several hour later Joey went limp and his eyes glazed over. We rushed him to the Emergency Vets. They worked on him for about 40 minutes and then declared my precious baby dead. I was devastated. We had an autopsy done to find out why this terrible thing had happened.
They said Joey died from a massive infection and that is why he had swelling and the red mark on his belly. The infection caused him to die of toxic shock. The E.R. Vet asked what kind of antibiotics he was on because he had never seen an infection develop to this degree in two days. When I informed him Joey had not been given any antibiotics for home he was surprised.
I feel my Joey died needlessly. He received NO preventative antibiotics and by not checking his swelling and red mark. We miss him desperately. Joey was the light of our lives and for him to be gone so soon is quite upsetting. I have never cried so many tears in my life. My precious baby is not here and he should be had I taken him to some one else more competent to handle his care.
I don't want anyone else to go through the loss of a beloved pet by not questioning everything your vet does. Please don't blindly place your trust in a vet. You need to be on your guard and go with your gut feelings.
