On March 8, at about 9:00 PM (just before closing time), I purchased a pair of sunglasses for ~$190. The cashier took my card and ran it through the machine. The cashier, my wife, and I stood around talking for about 5 minutes, then she asked for the amount again. I asked, didn't you already do this? She said no. Because no receipt had been generated yet, I assumed the sale had not closed, so I gave her my card. Well, the register kept declining the card over and over again. So we used my wife's debit card, which is linked to the same checking account, and the purchase took. We left the store with a sweet new pair of Ray-Bans, but the fleeting suspicion that our account had been double charged.
When we got home that evening, we looked at our online bank statement, and sure enough, we had been double charged. So we call the store after they opened the following morning, let them know we'll be there by noon to get our refund. The guy there says no problem, the girl the night before left a note about the incident.
Around noon, I arrive at the store to collect my refund. The guy says the bank refuses to reverse the charge and only the store manager can authorize a refund. Long story short, I light a fire under his butt and he lights a fire under the manager's butt, and the manager comes back in and refunds. So end of story, so we thought.
The next day, we see not one but TWO deposits for ~$190, so we assume they accidentally refunded us twice, and will catch it at their nightly audit or whatever it is they do for their books. Well, sure enough, their nightly audit caught their error, however not only did they take the the extra $190 they accidentally deposited, but the $190 refund as well. So to sum up, they charged us twice, refunded us twice, and charged us twice again so they still owe us $190 and some change. I'll update as the situation progresses.
