Moving company scam - negligent fraud or intentional fraud

See also report 249994 (on this site) for another person who just got ripped off, one week after I did, and see Yahoo reviews for two other people reviewing this company.

Their final bill was 250% of the estimate - about $3500 instead of about $1400 - the bill was presented to me after they had loaded everything and the driver had informed me neither they nor I could get to my things. I TWICE reviewed piece by piece, in detail, everything in my apartment with them AND additionally the driver walked through my apartment and saw everything before he started packing and only said "you might be a little over". They (see below) refused to explain their low ball bid (except "you had a few more things") or why they billed 250% more after they had already reviewed the contents of my apartment three times with consistent estimates of 1300-1400 or "a little more"! On the day of the move the mover was saying one thing, and the salesman, who'd said and written something completely different, would not take my calls ("So sorry, I'm busy, I'll call you right back" and never did)

They couldn't account for specifically the materials they billed me for ("we used about 15 rolls (of tape), at 5$ apiece" "How many exactly?" "Oh, I'd say about 15"). They promised to take furniture apart and put it back together on arrival. The mover didn't even have a screw driver and said "oh, we can't do that". I had to pack many of my own boxes, but got charged as if they had packed them (since they charge by each of the boxes they use, and incorporate their labor charges ["there are no labor charges"] into the cost of each box they OR YOU use). The shipment arrived 7 days after the original estimated arrival, and several days after subsequent arrival estimations.

Worst of all, after they got their first 70% (the day of the move), nobody NOBODY would return my calls or take responsibility for anything they had said or written.

I was given the phone numbers of two different drivers who each assured me they had my load. When my things arrived there was only the driver, no other help, so I carried everything except the mattress from the truck (even though I am legally defined as medically disabled).

I have pages of notes made when I called these characters these characters from the road while I was driving, a summary of which I emailed to the owner "Mike" who in my one conversation with him (when he was calling to get his money) didn't refute them, nor apologize for the NIGHTMARE they outline. I talked to "Harold", the salesman, who's own oral and written statements confirmed the amount of cubic feet estimated and that all furniture would be "disassembled and reassembled" but who later said he couldn't do anything to correct my bill, but his supervisor would call me (didn't call). I talked to "Sam the dispatcher" who gave self conflicting stories and explanations, and contradicted "Harold" and never called me back as promised. I talked to "Michelle" who described herself as an "assistant to the owner" but who "Harold" said was "just a secretary" who said 'the owner will call you" and never did until I stopped payment on the check. I talked to "Joe/John" of the "legal department" that quickly became only a "collections department" when I explained it looked like we were heading for litigation, and asked "what attorney is in charge of your legal department", who also never called me back and also gave contradictory accounts, etc.

I finally had to put a stop payment on the check and consult my lawyer and government agencies before anyone from the company would call me back (it was only the stop payment on the check that did it, since government has very little power or seemingly will to help). The final bill was 250% of the estimate, which I PAID JUST TO GET MY STUFF BACK as quickly as possible (I had planned on keeping it in storage with them, but when no one would return my calls, I found an address to ship it to, just to see if I'd ever see my things again then had to pay for a rental truck (300$ more) and move it all myself to my new address when I actually got my actual new residence). As it is I am missing furniture and have a nice box of smased dishes. ("fully insured" they claim orally and in writing, but only at 60 cents per pound, and the first driver said the company refused to provide any other insurance) I could go on and on (such as the apparently illegal soliciting of tips)... But the upshot is I can only conclude the many misrepresentations were intentional and that is quite a bit more serious than mere incompetence.
