Found an ad for employment by this company on Craigslist. Said "Unique opportunity for dog handlers".
Received a call from Roy Devries, who was opening a branch of "Geese Chasers" called "Geese Chasers - North". This is a company that uses Border Collies to "herd" geese off of properties that contract them to do so.
He explained to me that the company would pay me an hourly wage, reimburse for gas mileage, give benefits, company car, "find me" a Border Collie (dog), and pay the medical bills of this dog.
Was hired, told there was no immediate work, but that I could begin working full time by May 1st (more than a month later).
Spent my time looking for the dog, had several difficulties.
First dog that I found appeared to have some lameness in the back leg, to which the company volunteered to pay to have checked out.
When it actually came down to taking the dog to the vet, tried to cheap out - said we could "work the dog and see if he goes lame". And did not want to pay for x-rays that were already agreed upon.initially left the veterinarians office without paying, but did return to pay.
(Dog ended up having serious issue and could not be worked)
After that, I was turned down by a Border Collie Rescue Group (dog adoption group) because they did not trust the company. Rescue clearly stated that they would approve me for a dog, but not a dog that would work with Geese Chasers.
Rescue said that Geese Chasers had a "bad leadership reputation". Owner of rescue detailed specific encounters with the other company partner, Bob, that she found inhumane.
By May 16th, had done significant amount of work for this company outside of the geese chasing, with no compensation. Communicated such to Roy, saying that I now no longer have money for rent!
Roy said he would "cut a check" for my rent as I have done so much for the company. Did not give any details about "cutting" that check after that.
Now Roy is saying he has "backup income" for me in the form of Graphic Design through another business associate.
It is now May 21st and I am unpaid, no benefits, no car, no gas mileage, no Border Collie, though they did pay the medical bills of the one. Now they want me to work a completely different job for them.
