This company has been harassing me on and off for a year. I don't have voicemail or an answering machine, so when I answer the calls, there is dead silence, and eventually a ringing and a computer voice "if you would like to make a call, please hang up and dial again".
When the calls first started a year ago, someone WAS on the other end, and he asked for Eddy Bell. I told him no one by that name lived here, and I didn't know anyone by that name.
The man was brutal and rude, accusing me of all sorts of things. When I asked for his supervisor I was told "not a chance". When he called again, I told him I had filed a complaint with our attorney general and had contacted a
lawyer. The calls stopped.
They started again a month ago with the open line but no one on the other end; using *69 I got the number, called it and got "Allied Interstate". The woman demanded my phone number and said they wanted "Maria Lupo". I told her there was no one here by that name, and that I had had this phone number for the 21 years I've lived in Arizona. She hung up; the next day, I started getting phone calls at 8:30am, 11:30am, 2:30pm, 4:30pm, and 7pm - the open line, eventually the phone rings and I get the computerized message. This time, though, the phone number is blocked.
In the meantime, I had a tap put on my phone by Qwest, which leaves the tap on for two weeks. I got a call from Allied Interstate on the first day of the tap, then no calls for TWO WEEKS. When the two weeks were up, the calls started again. This company has the technology to detect TELEPHONE COMPANY TAPS and cease its illegal activity. They also know the taps are for two weeks only, and START THE HARASSING CALLS AS SOON AS THE TAP IS OFF.
The reason no one is on the other end of the call is that it is a computer dialing the number, and it is looking for an answering machine or voicemail (they emit some sort of computer signal) to leave the "call us immediately" message.
Did you know that this company has a contract with the U.S. Department of Education to COLLECT DEFAULTED STUDENT LOANS??? The first time they called, the obnoxious man insinuated that Eddy Bell went to a local technical college and had not paid his bill.
I have sent this same report to my congressman John McCain to find out why the Dept of Ed would hire a company that not only violates the law, but can't even track down the people who DO owe money. Our hard earned tax dollars at work...
