My husband contracted with Lehigh to move our stuff from New York to the island of Oahu, HI where I had been relocated to. They were very formal on the phone and we signed a contract including door to door service and packing for $2800. The truck didn't show up when we had scheduled pickup, they showed up the day we were supposed to be at the airport. It took two unidentified men with an unmarked truck approximately 2-3 hrs to pack our stuff. Their truck wouldn't start so they had to have my husband fix their truck before they would leave.
We arrived in Honolulu, got set up in a condo by my new employer and called to make the final payment and give the address for delivery. We were then told that fees totaling $1700 were assessed on our move ($108/hr for two men, $200 for fuel, the rest for "extra items not on original inventory") and that it was going to cost another $6000 to deliver our stuff!!! When I called their customer support, I was informed that 'The Density of my belongings had increased between pickup and storage and the fees reflected that...?!" I rechecked the inventory, and there's where the problem lies... The moving men had itemized everything into more than 52 separate entities... When put back together, their packing list exactly equalled the inventory my contract was signed upon.
Since then, they have leveled $222/mo in storage fees, $1700 for packing that is written in our file that we made them fax to us as being covered, and they'll ship to HI for $3500 but if we want it sent to our new home in NH, it's going to cost $4900 and if we can afford to go get it with a truck, they want $1200 to 'move it out of storage". I have gotten no satisfaction from the company after filing numerous complaints, and five separate employees have told me that it's not their fault and we need to pay immediately (not the guy who set up our account, we found out he was fired and is not considered a valid employee to have set up our account, and the second in command is conveniently onv vacation in Tel Aviv when we call). We have contacted the NYS Attorney General with no response, the NYSDOT with no response, the Federal Carrier Safety Association with no response, and the Better Business Bureau told us that we had to pay EVERYTHING if we wanted them to intervene because Lehigh Moving is a GOLD MEMBER OF THE BBB!!!
As things stand, our stuff is going to auction in two weeks unless we sell our vehicle and pay their ridiculous fees. We have little recourse as everyone has ignored our requests for intervention, and no money to pay for a good, competent lawyer to assist us. I have no idea how I'm going to explain the loss of our original birth certificates, diplomas, my grandmother's china that was a wedding present, the handmade furniture from my father in law that was a wedding present also... I wish someone would put them out of business for good, they're absolute scam artists.
