Office Supply Scam Ripoff

April

I notice that there are several other reports on this company. I have read them, and they could have been written by me.

This is a company that finds out the name of a ranking officer in your company, usually the CFO it seems, and then calls later, apparently, to offer you fabulous deals on office supplies because they are relocating and have to liquidate.

I was offered grosses of supplies, and I checked to be sure that the pricing really was as good as stated. Although I was assured that each price was for a 12 pack (or other similar quantity), the pricing ALL turned out to be for eaches when the invoice arrived. I had expected to be spending about $400 or so of company money, and ended up with an invoice for almost $6000.

I called them and said that the invoice was higher than I expected. They offered me a half price discount. I said I'd have to check with my boss and get back to them. Of course, he said no deal, so I called and left them a message (you always have to leave messages at their "company") to the effect that the deal was unacceptable and we'd be sending everything back.

Shortly, I got a call back from a woman who was very snippy and said that no one had FORCED me to order these things. I replied that she was right and that everything was fine, but that she'd be getting all of her stuff back.

We shipped by parcel post, the cheapest possible way, and I just feel blessed that the company I work for overlooked my mistake.

Incidentally, I got a second invoice from them a couple of days ago (more than a month after I sent their stuff back) stating that I had not returned 2 gross of pens, and that we owed them $400 for the pens. I wrote them back a letter and sent it registered with return receipt stating that everything they sent to us was returned, that we owed them nothing and would pay nothing. I'm interested to see how that goes.

Part of the scam is that they don't give you any written pricing, so that they can say that there was a "misunderstanding." Another part of the scam is that you don't get the invoice for 3 or 4 weeks, which gives you time to start using the supplies. Luckily, my company is small enough that all of the supplies were still intact.

Lessons I learned? Always, but ALWAYS, get the prices in writing, just like Mama always told me. I hope this report keeps someone else from making the same mistake!
