Long story - I'll try to keep it short. I started service with Cellular One 17 years ago. Suncom AT&T bought Cellular One, and we kept service with the new owner for several years. One day I decided I wanted a feature-rich phone, and Suncom AT&T did not offer what I wanted. I went with Cingular for one year (after having been with Suncom AT&T for 15 years), then switched back to Suncom AT&T because Cingular coverage was spotty.
In December, I received a phone call telling me I was three months behind in my payments. I provided a credit card number and paid the bill. After getting off the phone, my wife told me the bill was only TWO months late, not three! I called them back immediately, and was told that the payment was for 2 months of service, and 87.00 in roaming fees. Let me digress - when we went back with Suncom AT&T, we went with the Suncom Unplan.
Our phone said "FREE" anytime we were on "home turf", and did not have to pay for any minutes or roaming. This was from around July until around April not quite a full year. We received a letter in the mail that said our current plan was no longer available. I called them, and "upgraded" to the Suncom Unplan Platinum. I was told "no roaming within Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and parts of West Virginia. I was told that (and I quote) ANYTIME the word SUNCOM was in the display of my phone, we were on "home turf" and no roaming charges would apply. COOL! That is, until we went on vacation to Los Angeles, California! My and my wife's phones both prominently displayed SUNCOM AT&T in the display, so we assumed we were on "home turf" and it was OK to use the phones at will - after all, we wouldn't have to pay for any minutes. WRONG-O! The Suncom rep explained it to me that if the phone said SUNCOM AT&T that it was not the same thing as SUNCOM! Well excuuuuse me! How the heck am I supposed to know the difference???
Anyhow, I refused, and still refuse to pay for the roaming charges, and my credit card company back-charged Suncom after finding in my favor. Suncom offered to abate the minutes if I'd admit wrongdoing and sign for another year's service. NO WAY! I did nothing wrong! I terminated service by giving them 29 days notice, which they said was not long enough. They said I had to give them 30 days, and if I owed them any money on my renewal date, that the contract would automatically be renewed and they would charge me another $200 if I stopped paying. How stupid is that???
When I signed on for service, they charged me for two months of service, so I let my last month of service ride on that original extra payment. The entire 30 day period that I knew I was going to have my service turned off, they pestered the heck out of me in spite of me repeatedly telling them I was stopping service with them! Every day some jerk called me and wanted to know when I was going to send payment for that month! I guess they don't take notes??? Now they're sending collection agencies after me over the $87.00 in roaming minutes and they've added charges that have yet to be explained (they're asking for $178.00).
I say it's vague and ambiguous that my phone display showed SUNCOM AT&T in the display in California. How am I supposed to know that SUNCOM and SUNCOM AT&T are two separate companies??? I sent both Suncom and the collection agency cease and desist letters, but the collection agency is still calling me. How the heck do you explain something like this to someone (Suncom) who apparently has bricks for brains? After all, my credit card company saw right through their garbage. You'd think that would be enough proof for them that they're wrong! What next? I won't be going back to Suncom, the company that "doesn't get it"!
