Circuit City
Rebate ripoff, false advertisement, bait and switch, non existant rebate

On February 1 I was in search for an LCD Flat Panel Monitor. I found the Samsung SyncMaster 912N on www.circuitcity.com advertized for $349.99, after $120.00 in rebate (s). Since I have a Circuit City store in my neighborhood, I went over to the store to purchase the monitor. After I saw a sample in the store and had decided to purchase it, I showed the cashier the ad from the website. I was told that it was a "web only" deal and that I could not purchase the monitor for that price at the store. From the store, I called my husband who purchased the monitor online so that I could pick it up at the store while I was there. That was the beginning of the hassle I was in for.

After I got home and unpacked the monitor, I went online to find the rebate. There was no such rebate. I did find one for $20 and one for $70, but none for $120. I thought that perhaps I just didn't see it, so I contacted the online support via email. The email response I received was that they needed specifics to research my issue (purchase date, invoice or order #, etc.).

I replied with the information with no luck. I was sent a note suggesting I call a toll-free online help number and after doing so, got no where. The person on the phone suggested I contact the manufacturer and that there was nothing he could do. On 3/2 they wrote: "Thank you for contacting the Circuit City Rebate Center. We apologize our answer could not be more satisfactory to your situation. Regrettably, there is nothing more we can do. I have put your brand and model through our system and I am only showing the same as you one for $20.00 from us and the other $70.00 from the Manufacturer.

The only thing that I could suggest you do is call 1-800-843-2489, this is our website support team, they are in charge of the rebates on line etc, if you call them, they can further assist you on this matter.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and hope you will continue to enjoy the products Circuit City offers."

My response was, "I found the Samsung SyncMaster 912N monitor online for "$349.99" after rebate (s). I purchased it from circuitcity.com and picked it up at the store. I paid $469.99 and have yet to find rebates in the amount of $120.00. I've tried both email and calling the toll free number to get no where and go in circles. This is false advertising and I will never shop Circuit City again."

After writing my complaint again, I received this response: "Thank you for writing to Circuit City. I understand your concern regarding the rebate for the 'SAM 912N' purchased on February 01. We are sorry the rebate form you need is no longer online. Rebate forms are available on www.circuitcity.com during the promotional dates of the rebate and remain accessible through the final submission date (postmark
deadline).

Once the final submission date has passed, the rebate form is automatically removed from our web site. I apologize that we are unable to fulfill your rebate form request. I apologize for any inconvenience you may encounter and hope that the above information is helpful and serves the purpose. Thanks again for writing to Circuit City. Your continued patronage is important to our company. We hope to have the occasion to serve your future consumer electronics, home, office and entertainment needs."

I finally mailed the rebate for $70 yesterday. I figure I should try to get what ever I can out of them.
