Recently on holiday in Cyprus, my family and I went to a Mexican restaurant in the resort of Protaras, Cyprus. We only had 20 notes (which is the equivalent of 30) after paying for the meal so decided to go to the bar next door for a drink to get change to give a tip.
The barman came to our table, took the drinks order and my father gave him one of the 20 notes. The barman came back with change of 10.
My father questioned the barman who got very angry and said we were wrong. I told the barman I saw the 20 note too but he denied it. My father decided to leave the drinks and the bar in disgust. The barman called us back saying very loudly that 10 was nothing to him and gave us the right change.
We decided to stay and then the barman came over with a receipt saying he was short money from the til! He didn't count the money in the til and expected us to believe him! He also made a big deal in front of all of the other holiday makers in the bar. I was never so mad in my life that he tried to blame this stunt on us.
This was the third night of our holidays and on the previous two nights we were short changed also. Both barman gave the correct change as soon as we noticed.
Short changing is obviously rife in Cyprus and I urge everyone visiting there to check your change, especially after a few drinks. Stay away from Cafe Flora especially because you have to make a huge scene to get your money back there.
