Complaint / Review
Campus Habitat
Liars who false advertise

I signed a two month lease for the months of June and July in May; and I signed a year lease in March. I have been very dissatisfied since the beginning of my summer lease. Number four listed on your lease agreement clearly states that If applicable, landlord will furnish the Tenants common area and bedroom with the following: furniture included.

My move in day was June 1, when Campus Habitat had a student show me to 1010A; a room with no furniture, where the walls had not been painted, the carpet had not been cleaned, and the bathroom, carpet, and window sill had bugs. On this same day of June 1 I asked to speak with Egypt Muhammad while I was on the premises and I was ignored. My mother came to the leasing office and paid my rent for the entire summer on May 31 where she asked many questions that she never received answers to.

Campus Habitat has apartments with three bedrooms. Bedroom 1 is the most spacious and the bathroom has a bath tub; bedroom 2is just as large but the bathroom only has a shower; and bedroom 3 is the smallest but the bathroom is attached to the bedroom rather than in the hall. I was dissatisfied with room number 2 and clearly stated when signing my lease that I wanted a room number 1. Because room number 2 had been so filthy, Egypt put me in a room number 3 (the smallest room) and told me that I would be able to move to a room number 1 at the end of the summer at the beginning of my August lease.

I did not move in to my apartment until June 15 because also on the first there was a random guy staying there instead of the tenant that was supposed to be living there. I asked the leasing office if they knew who he was or why he was there and they didn't do anything to fix the situation. The student who showed me to my apartment sat on the couch with him as she left me alone in the filthy room number 2 to fill out a checklist. During this time, I was in summer school and I had a job at TJ MAXX. Because I had been expecting to move in on the first I told my job I would be able to return at the beginning of June. Since my apartment was not ready, I was unable to go to work and as a result I lost my job.

Some time after having a key to the premises I found a letter on my door stating that I owed Campus Habitat $147.53 for rent that I was late on. This was clearly a mistake on the managements behalf because the lease that I signed for the months of June and July stated that the overall amount due was $398 which was paid on May 31.

Since I had problems with the lease the people in the leasing office have been rude and disrespectful. Also Campus Habitat tried to hold my renters information to try and prevent me from moving away from the apartment complex. Then they told me that they would release my information and terminate my August lease if I paid them $350. I have also been told that in order to move to a room number 1 I would have to pay $350 after Egypt Muhammed (a manager in the leasing office) told me I would be able to move between the months of July and August. The lease says nothing about moving within the complex and the lease says there's no sub-leasing. I was also told that they would terminate my August lease if I found someone to sublease.

Since June 1 my mom and myself had been trying to contact Terry Roberts, the property manager; who I was unable to meet until some time in early July when I was inquiring about why someone had been moved into the room I was verbally promised by Egypt Muhammad. I was basically told that because nothing had been put in writing that Campus Habitat could do whatever they wanted to do and that they didnt have another room available for me.

I wanted a bedroom number 1 because theyre more spacious and they have the bathtub in the bathroom. I have not been able to receive that bedroom and somewhere in my file someone on the management team wrote that I asked for a room number 2 which is not what I asked for. While filling out my application there was a portion where the leasing office was supposed to tell me what room I was supposed to be staying in. I was unaware of the room I would be in until the first.

I have been trying to move to another complex but now I am unable to move to that particular complex because they are full and the situation with campus Habitat has not been handled. I've already turned in the keys and told Campus Habitat verbally and in writting that I will not be staying with them for the 2012 school year.

Furthermore, the lease that I have was never signed by the landlord. Doesn't that make it not legally binding?
