My 15 year old son went to his high school pricipal on Oct. 29. He was angry and upset about the lack of security and told the principal and the school counselor that he didn't want to be on this earth anymore and if he didn't get out of school that he might hurt someone.
I was called and was met by the Pearland police and taken to my son. They discussed what was going on and decided that my boy needed to be removed from school for the day. Then it was remove him till a mental health professinal said he was fit to be back.
We went thru almost 3 weeks of trying to find a treatment center and psychiatrist for him. We started treatment on Nov. 19. He has made incredibale progress now that he is medicated.
We are still in ongoing treatment with him.
On Dec. 3, we went back to school. I was called by my son to come get him. A bully at school was taunting my son. He went to his principle. Again I was asked to remove him for the day and he could try again the next day.
Well, the next day the principle filed terroristic threat charges againts my son with the asst. DA, which were denied. Two weeks after that, in the wake of the tragedy in Conneticut, the DA opened all cases like my son's up and had all of the kids picked up. My son was arrested on Saturday, Dec. 15 and taken to the Brazoria county juvenile detention center, in hand cuff.
We were not allowed to see or speak with him till Monday, Dec. 17 at his hearing in Judge Marc Holders court. We had our attourney present of course. After presenting the judge with the paperwork from the treatment center and our psychiatrist, the school, and reassuing him that I am a stay at home mother and my son is never unsupervised, Holedr decided my son was a danger to others and they would hold him for 10 more days.in 5 days they will transport him to Galveston to be evaluated by a court appointed doctor (costing us an additional $800). Then they might release him.
I would like to make it clear that my son didn't actually do anything. He was angry and frustrated, instead of acting on those feelings he went to the people that he felt he could trust to help him. He was asking for help. We, as his parents were given no support and were just left to our own devices on finding a doctor and a treatment program for our son.
Now, Judge Holder thinks my son is a danger. I was also told that the judge can keep him for ten working days at a time with a hearing after each ten days is up indefinatly.
All of the people involved in this have abused their power and my son's trust. We have no advocates in this, no rights as parents and my son has no rights.
My son did not act on his feelings. He went to the people that he was suppossed to be able to trust, they said to him that they would support him and protect him. They lied. Even the report they read in court was a lile. When I brought that to the judge's attention, he didn't even look at me when I spoke to him. He never once looked at us.
My son will not be home for Christmas. He might not be home for New Years. He was supposed to start back at school on Jan. 3, that will probably not happen now. He has been denied his education. I am not allowed to be his advocate and speak on his behalf.
Change must be made. The juvenile justice system is a joke. It is severly broken. Children like my son get lumped in with kids that steal, assault, kill. My son is on suicide watch. He is going to be allowed to contine with his therapy, transported by Brazoria county (we'll recieve a bill for that as well) but he will be taken there in leg shackles, handcuffs and the orange jumpsuit and orange shoes. How is that supposed to help his mental state?
We are only allowed visitation on Saturdays for one hour between 8am and 12pm. He is allowed to make a 5 minute phone call on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
My heart is breaking for my son and I can't do anything about it. Nothing. I sincerly hope that no one ever has to go thru this with their child.
