My friend was released on bail after spending the night in the steuben county jail. When he was arrested by the sheriff's dept. The officers allowed him to thake his medications with him. Not only did the medical staff there not give him all of his medications they also did not return them to him when he was released. Is it not procedure for the correction officer to look at the property list to make certain that all property is returned when an inmate is released. I called the facility and inquired about him coming to pick up his medication not once was I told that it could not be picked up on a weekend because there is no medical staff there on the weekend. If the officers do not have access to the medical room please explain to me how the inmates get their medications on the weekend. When we got there we were told that it would just be a few minutes. After 20 minutes waiting we rang the buzzer again the officer that came over the speaker and rudely replied we are a little busy right now we will get to it when we can. Again we were not informed that they had to call medical staff to get it. He asked to speak to the sgt. After waiting another ten minutes the sgt. Came out and very rudely said you want me. It was at this time we were informed that they would have to try and contact medical staff to get his medications. It seems that if they knew that then they could have had someone there in that length of time. When the sgt, was asked if they are supposed to if they are supposed to check the list, he said rudely dont try pt put this on us. As it is right now he will be without his heart, cholesterol. High blood pressure medications until monday and he will have to make another 35 mile one way trip to get it. Is he going to have to be treated like this again. Last I knew the law was innocent until proven guilty. If the officers want respect they should learn to give it also.
