I had Michigan Motor Exchange rebuild the engine in my 1993 Ranger in July. I removed and reinstalled it myself.
Regarding the job..
Pros: The work they did seems to be top notch and I am very happy with it so far. I have approx 4000 miles on it so far. I followed their break in procedure to the letter and everything seems to be perfect.
Cons: They quoted me a price which factored in the core charge. If my heads and block / crank were in good shape, they would not impose a core charge. When I called they told me that my heads / crank and block were damaged and therefore I would have to pay the core. I agreed but went to the shop unannounced and asked to see the "bad" cores. They brought them out and sure enough, they were damaged and unusable. I was in the process of leaving when something caught my eye and I realized that the crankshaft was the wrong year and couldn't possibly be mine. I then confronted them and they initially said I was wrong until I proved to them they were wrong. They then scrambled around until they found my crankshaft and apologized. I looked very closely at the heads they showed me and was unable to determine if they were mine or not.in the end they still charged me the cores because they said my heads were cracked and my block was damaged. I can't prove it, but I think that they swapped the heads out intentionally when they swapped my crank.
Moral of the story: They are very good at rebuilding engines and you will get a good product. Just be sure that you either watch them take your motor apart or have your heads / block and crank clearly marked to avoid the possibility of all of your core items going "bad" while you aren't looking
