Last month, air conditioning/heat contractor, Benito R Ruiz of Irving, Texas, was called to work on our washing machine because we were having problems with it. Upon determining that our washing machine needed a new timer, we agreed to let him do the work upon his return later in the day provided that he give us the receipt for the goods.
During the day, however, we tested the timer ourselves and discovered that there was nothing wrong with it at ALL! When he arrived in the afternoon, he brought in a new timer in a partially opened box and was ready to install the unit.
After its installation, we requested the receipt to which he refused. He said he would charge us $150 for the timer plus the cost of labor of $90 whose total approached the cost of a brand new washer. We then showed him an internet price for the exact timer for only $90 with another vendor. His face turned red, and he felt embarrassed.
We then asked him to give us the old timer which he refused also possibly to keep the evidence from us. Then he proceeded to install the timer knob.
I tested the timer knob myself and noted that there was nothing wrong with the timer. My colleagues and I confronted him and question him as to why we needed a new timer if the old one was still working and we only needed a timer knob? It turned out that it was the timer knob that was broken and not the timer.
Being embarrassed and trying to keep a straight face, he tried to explain his way out of a difficult situation and pretended that he did not understand my Spanish (since Mr. Ruiz is a Spanish-speaker).
In the end, we did not pay him a penny for his time and gasoline for showing up. He un-installed the new timer and proceeded to walk out the door leaving in his wake a mess in our house that he never offered to clean up.
Talk about dishonesty! Salvadoran people like him should be scrutinized for dishonesty. He had no conscience whatsoever that he tried to scam us on a timer we did not need.instead, I looked up the part of the timer knob and ordered it on the internet for only $26!
If he had been honest about what we really needed for our washing machine, I would have paid him for the cost of the part plus his time for showing up but not the $240 he was asking. Mr. Benito R Ruiz tried to scam us for nearly the cost of a new washing machine!

It is believed that he may be an illegal alien so we have reported him to Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.
