Monthly charge on credit card and NEVER notified me - should be against the law

I noticed a charge on my credit card buried in other paperback book charges. Realized months later that this company somehow had me signed up for a service I knew nothing about. Horrible business practice. Feel completely ripped-off. How is this legal.
