Last year, around Apr./May, I received a call from someone "request" I made to cancel my service with the "Public Yellow Pages." I told him that I was not aware of ever signing up with the "Public Yellow Pages, " but he insisted that I had an account with them and that if I didn't get a "cancellation number" right away, I would have to pay $599.00 for a new year of service. I said I did not order any online advertisement, so they finally said that I have to go through their third party customer service dept. And they asked me a bunch of questions which I do not fully remember.
Today, 1/30, they have called us and said that the unpaid bill, $667.40 (with interest and administration fees) will be sent to the collection agency if I do not pay right away. They played a recorded message where I apparently said “yes” to the question that I agree to pay the amount for the online advertisement. I am positive that they doctored the message to sound as if I am agreeing to this online subscription. I have refused to pay the amount.
Any suggestions to protect ourselves from these online predators?
