A white truck pulled up in our driveway, and I sent my brother out to see who it was. He didn't come in right away so I went out with him and was greeted by a man named "Sonny" who said it was nice to see me again. I had never seen him before in my life.
He told me he had chicken he wanted to give me as a gift from he and his father. Another man was pulling boxes out of the coolers in the back of the small white pick up truck. I told my brother to just take the box from the man, wanting to be rid of them as I really didn't know them.
However, they insisted on coming in our garage, so I told them they could just place the box on a table and be going. But no, they proceeded into my kitchen! My fiance was cooking supper and my mother was standing there with a confused look on her face which I returned.
The second man, "Vinny" placed the boxes on a kitchen chair, and "Sonny" proceeded to greet all of us repeatedly, supposedly a friend of the family, asking my mother about her job and so forth. He then rips what appeared to be an entire cow out of a box, bragging the meat up.
He even told my mom that he had brought her favorite and threw some meat on the floor. He did that with all his merchandise, threw the box on the floor and then the meat on it. Funny I know my mom pretty damn well, and I had never even heard of this meat, let alone thought it was her favorite.
Next he showed off some chicken. He asked my fiance if he still worked at McDonald's, which was strange because he has never worked in a restaurant, I however, had worked at McD's for 2 years when I was in high school. This man claimed he had sold meat to us years before as well.
He asked my fiance if he had a new girlfriend, which made my jaw drop because there I was 8 months pregnant standing there. My fiance told him his fiancee was right there in the room with a baby on the way.
Then he cut the chit-chat and asked my mom how much she was willing to spend. She told him she really didn't have the money, but he wouldn't take no for an answer. He complained that he wouldn't have pulled all this meat out if he thought it wouldn't get bought.
He told her she could write a check. She again told him she didn't have the funds. He told her she could post date a check if she wanted, that he had thought his dad had done it for her before. Supposedly his dad ran the operation and had visited us before.
He began to haggle with her, and finally to get rid of him she threw a twenty on the table because he said he would take any thing she could afford. He made it sound as though we were getting the whole cow still, but when all was said and done, we had 6lbs of hamburger patties to show for it.
"Sonny" supposedly had to call his dad and make sure it was ok to make a deal. He picked up OUR phone, assuring us it was a 1-800 number. He spoke a few strange words, they sounded like baseball team names, and then hung up. He did this twice, and then the phone rang. My fiance answered it but no one was there.
The man made out a receipt, with no company name on it, no contact at all, and he and his partner picked things up and headed out the door. My brother helped them out as my mother and I looked at each other, thoroughly confused.
We wondered if we had been "had". But things were strange. He had made reference to my father, saying his father and he used to go to bars. He asked my mother if my dad was still in the bottle. I thought perhaps he had read mail on the refrigerator, but that still didn't explain how he knew someone had worked at McD's.
And we weren't even sure if he had said HIS name was Sonny. I had thought he said his dad's was. And that would explain things because my father had grown up with a Sonny. However, I got online and soon found articles telling of similar swindles.
So take heed, be firm with any salespeople fitting this MO, tell them to get out!
