I was the VERY happy owner of a 3 months - old Dell Vostro 3500 (Windows 7 on the internal 320 GB disk, Ubuntu 11.04 on my external 32GB SSD). However, I was seduced by the Vostro 3550 mainly because of its backlit keyboard and its USB3 and ordered it, giving the 3500 to a member of my family.
However, on the 3550, I cannot anymore either install Linux on my SSD (from a CD or USB key) or run a Linux LiveCD (LiveCD content on an USB key remains possible, but Ubuntu 11.04 will STILL not install from it).
I called Dell support who, after 20 minutes of billed communication, answered me that "Live CD were not supported on the 3550", something that was NOT told in the product description - otherwise I would not ahev bought it: a machine on which you cannot install Linux is only half a machine nowadays.
