I received a $50 prepaid Visa card as a gift from a parent of one of my students. The card is issued by Metabank. The receipt, which the parent taped to the packaging showed $50 purchased on 12/14. On the packaging, it is stated that there is a $4.95 purchase fee and 'no fees after purchase. On 12/20, I used the card to purchase a $50 gift card at a restaurant. I opened the packaging of the gift card for the first time at the cash register at the restaurant. I was given a receipt showing the available balance of the card was only $41.66. I had never opened it. Where is the additional $8.64? I feel consumers are being ripped off by these prepaid gift cards. The consumer paid $4.95 up front for the $50 card. I could only use $41.66. This is not the first time I have had this kind of issue with a prepaid gift card.
