This definitely was a scam! They wanted to verify that the card number was valid and not being monitored. Then they would use it for a much larger purchase.
I definitely do not know how my information was obtained as the card is never used outside my home. A hacker must have gotten into one of the three businesses that have the information on file for payment of their monthly charges. The companies are Century Link, Collier County Utilities and Comcast.
An attempt was made to charge the amount of $9.50 to my credit card. It was flagged by my credit card company (CCC) as a possible fraud because it was outside the scope of my usual purchases and was made via the internet. I was notified by phone and there also was an alert when I signed into my account. When the CCC was contacted and I verified I had not made the charge, they immediately cancelled the card and are reissuing a new one.
