We were called by a woman saying that we were qualified for a "free" government grant in the amount of $7,000. They spoke with my husband, gave him a verification number and told him to call another number. He called, gave them the verification number and we were asked to send them a $250 processing fee. We told them we didn't have the money at that time. The said they would hold the grant for us for 14 days. We called back when we had the money and they gave us instructions to send it western union. We sent them the money. Then they said the money was sent but that it was being held up because we needed to pay the taxes on it. The taxes were $435. We paid the taxes yesterday by borrowing the money from family. We haven't received our money. We are a family of 4. My husband is the only one working while I am a full time college student. We are now out nearly $700 and no way to pay our bills that are now due or past due because of this scam.
