In October I was solicited to sign up for Spark Energy to be my gas provider. They informed me that I will get a lower cost to my gas then I would get with Nicor a minimum of 8% less. I signed up on the phone. The first two bills were 8% less than Nicor and 13% less. I was thrilled so I did not check my next four months bills assuming I was still making the savings. Then I decided to check again and noticed I was being charged 81% higher for my gas than if I was with NICOR. Upon further examination I realized that over all Spark Energy charge me 64% more for my gas than Nicor gas over the 8 months I was with them. The last two months were suppose to be adjusted to the FIX rate but they never did, so I canceled them. I believe it is there operation to get you in thinking you will save on the gas then hit you with the higher rate in hopes you are not checking. To check the rate or to find Nicor rate to check against it is not an easy task. Later I was told by a representative of Spark that they can not afford to charge less than Nicor for Nicor does not make a profit and they have too. A margin of 645 increase is price gouging.
