I used AES for student loans during college, totaling over 30K. After college, I commissioned as an officer in the Marine Corps which happened to pay for college loans the year I commissioned. The Marine Corps has been paying off 1/3 of my debt every year for the past 3 years, this being the last year. Every year I've struggled with the same problems, trying to get AES to keep my loans in deferment and trying to get them to fill 1 form out and either fax it back to me or to the Department of Defense. I begin the process every Jan and it is finally over by July (after multiple, multiple tries). I don't have the same problems with other lenders.
For whatever reason, AES won't send the form back to me (which was sent by me in the first place). Last year I was able to have the DOD send it back to me, the totals were grossly different from what AES said I owed. I believe AES might be extorting the DOD for extra money. My accountant is looking into it before I move forward with an official accusation.
Their representatives on the phone are unhelpful and borderline rude as well.
