La Costa owned and managed by Westdale, they told me there was a $100 deposit then changed it to $200 then unknow to me charged outrageous fees and will not accept rent. This started when we were moving in and they gave me they wrong apartment, I blew it off then I went to them the first day and told them there was faulty lighting issues and this particular apartment has a stairwell inside the home that is very unsafe there is nothing (doors, molding around it anything) to tell what it is and the first night before we completely moved in I tried to turn the light on, it was not fixed and fell all the way down the the end of the stairwell inside the apartment, broke my foot and rushed to the hospital.
I informed the complex as of what happened and I was not able to work for the month (we did pay them rent) they told me they would postpone the extra deposit, I didn't mind to go ahead and pay it even though I didn't think it was right. Then out of the blue I come home to a letter stuck in the door stating I had to vacate in 72 hours and checked the box that they hand delivered this to a person in my apartment, I was in an interview and not at home. So, as they won't accept my rent and upcharged me as they said they would not because of what had happened and my hospital bill is over $6,500 that I now am responsible for. My foot should have been healed but it is now worse after 7 weeks of a boot cast.
My husband had to drop everything, jobs here and out of town to take care of me and inturn were barely coming up with the rent and get suprised with this letter. It is a very unsafe apartment and anyone who has children has to put a kiddy or dog gate on it. They indicated they are trying to close thier books and get thier accounting straight so I assume this is why they are. They went back on thier word and flat out lied to me, I guess to get money. I have never been late even one day on rent in 20 years and all the sudden they won't take my rent after they said they would and hold the extra deposit until 1 month so I could walk.
I have an e-mail from the employee who told me they would not charge this saved. I have lived in many apartments and by far this is the worst. This is all I could fit, but there are many unhappy residents that have been telling me they upcharge all the time and unhappy, I already broke my foot the first day and didn't think I could move out even though I asked for a 1st floor and they gave me a second, I had to be carried down for week and I have 2 dogs to walk daily. We have never been late to this complex so far, so for an eviction notice and refusal of my rent, I don't even know what rights I have this has been a horible experience and I don't know what to do about it they (lied and said they hand delivered to a person) impossible I was not there nor my husband and can prove it.
So I have not said anything else to them, wondering if I could have a case or get out of this lease without destroying my rental history and the trouble of moving again. Do they have the right to outright lie then upcharge, bully and scare me into paying this? There's more but that it all I can think of at the moment, but I don't think they even have a full contract because I never went back, they have had serveral complaints. If you could see the picture of the stairwell right next to the bathroom and no light (which I requested to fix the day I was to move in) you can see how easily this could happen. They are taking advantage of people!!!
