I can't believe that this all started almost three years ago over a telephone call. Active Periodicals Inc. Called to see if I wanted to enter in their sweepstakes, and if I did, I would have to buy three magazines. Well I was very naive about what I was doing.
Next thing, I knew I was being contracted and recorded into the magazine agreement that I entered into this conversation with the person over the phone. I was agreeing to receive such many magazines over a period of 16 months to pay, and nothing for the remaining months of service.
When I received my first bill, it read that this company was charging me $33 a month for four magazines. For example, I would receive Better Homes and Gardens for 36 issues over a period of three years.
This started August year, each and every month, the company would charge me $33 on my credit card. And, the company was calling me again, May. Little did I know what was happening...
That I was sucked into this mess again, not knowing that if I did renew another year, and it went up to $35 a month for the same magazines... There were calls in between when they would tell me if I wanted to pay in full amount since I had such great credit. The first time, I could not pay the full amount, so the company kept billing me each month.
Now, I must admit I did receive my magazines all of and there was a period of time, when I thought I was done paying, but I guess I wasn't...
I received another call in August one of the supervisors was asking me if I was still receiving the magazines? I said yes. He told me that I have not finished paying my bills... I went through the same process from where I was two years ago. And then I realized that when the letter came through the mail that the Active Periodicals Inc had thanked me for my order... I don't even remember what all happened or even felt like I was putting another order in...
Now I was being charged $41.90 a month for 24 months and nothing for the remaining months of service. And for 2 magazines that I didn't order! For example, Outdoor Life, 48 issues for 4 years. First of all, if this is all being recorded, why are my Magazine Titles wrong!
Recently, a representative from the Fiance Department called me asking if I wanted to pay in full amount with a discount taking off my bill. My bill was a little over $800, and with the discount taken off, it was $502.80.
If someone had told me about this company, I would never have signed up.
I feel like I was being mislead, and that Active Periodicals does not tell their customers the full story. They do not let you know how may issues or how long the person is supposed to receive these magazines. When I was receiving the Oprah Magazines, all I was paying was $28 a year for 12 months! And, I did not have to be recorded over the phone.
