Active Periodicals first contacted me in 2003 a few weeks after my father passed away. I was so distraught at the time that I was ready to agree to almost anything to get them to hang up and leave me alone. However, I am sure that I did not agree to a 5 year contract which included more magazines than anybody could read in a lifetime.
They called me again a few months later and told me that I had another 56 months (or there abouts) left on my contract and would I like to change my selection of magazines. I said "what contract?" I had not signed anything. They said that we had a verbal contract because I had agreed to receive these magazines and to pay for them monthly over a 5 year period and they had all of this on tape. The total amount of money that they said I agreed to was around $600. I said I didn't have a contract so they sent me a copy of our so called contract.
In the last 2 years they have called me several times with offers to consolidate my payments or to send less magazines. But I just continued to get more and more magazines. Today they called me at work and offered a 5 % discount on one of my accounts if I payed it off in full. But my other account which I opened in Nov would still go on as usual until the 5 years was up at a rate of $33.92/month. I never asked to open another account. When I say that I do not want any more magazines, they seem to interpret that as "open another account for this woman and keep sending magazines and keep charging her credit card more and more money". And then they lie and say that I agreed to it!
This company is extremely dishonest. They are like an infestation that won't leave you alone until they have completely ripped you off!!! Someone needs to do something about these people! They need to be stopped! I'm not sure what I'm going to do to get rid of them but I can't go on like this. Any help or advice would be appreciated.
