Jim is a liar and cheat. I had a pretty bad injury last year and wanted to suppliment my home heating with wood, so I can heat the area where I stay the most and not burn through a lot of oil.
Jim is advertising firewood on Craigslist, and I agreed to purchase 1.25 cords of seasoned wood so I could start burning right away at $300. He arrives at my home with the cordwood after dark, but didn't really think too much about that. I went out to meet him (and like all scammers he was pleasant, and seemed honest). He said he would hand unload the wood, and didn't think that two people unloading would speed the process. So I paid him cash, and went into my home. I heard him start to unload, and went about my business. Just a few minutes later I hear Jim drive off, and thought that was fast.
The next morning I went out to find that he only left me 1/2 a cord, and the wood is wet and can't be burned. 1/2 cord of wet wood would be $75.
Yes it doesn't seem like a big deal. But when your broke. And cold. Being scammed isn't any fun.
