Promised bonuses denied for trivialities

I started with Mapco in August. I was promised that I would have the opportunity to make a bonus of up to $1500 a month with the bonus structure they have in place for their re-image stores. After the training period was over, I was put in charge of running the store where I trained at. The store manger who was running that store had to cover another store. But since the store was not permanently assigned to me, I was not given a bonus while running that store for the better part of two months. Even though I did everything that a store manager should do for that time, I was not given a bonus.

I was finally given a permanent store in November of '08 and of course it was not in good shape when I got it. I expected that. If you have worked in management for any period of time, you will know that any store that needs a new manager, needs one for a reason. So I expected that I would not be getting any kind of decent bonus until I could get the store in shape. I was right.

However, I soon got in place a staff that worked well for me and my customers.By February, the store was running great. Sales were up. Margins were up, and the store was running at a good profit. I was expecting to get a good bonus for the first time. But then my assistant in training made an error while sending in the paperwork at the end of February. She forgot to enter in the credit card totals on February the 27th. That showed a huge shortage (- $1,450) on the over/short report on the paperwork for February. Any shortage or overage over a certain amount, of course, is deducted dollar for dollar out of my bonus for the month. I found out about the error and called my District Manager, Todd Stout, and he told me to call my edit clerk. I did that and informed him of the error. He said that it would bounce back the next day, so I shouldn't worry.

Well it didn't. It bounced back on the 1st of March, causing, you guessed it, a huge overage ($1450) for the month that was deducted dollar for dollar out of my bonus for March. Now I thought it would be pretty easy to determine that this was a simple paperwork error and I was not actually short $1450 one month and magically over by the same amount the next month. But the only response I have gotten from them is that it is my fault for not checking what my assistant sent in and that they would look into it.

Well I wasn't very pleased with that answer, so I talked with the HR department responsible for cutting the bonus checks. They said they are not responsible for anything but cutting the checks, and I need to sort it out with my DM or regional. I called my regional manager, and she understood my case and the best I got back from her is that she was busy and would look into it. One month after I complained about being cheated on my bonus I was fired.

I'd love to sue these guys and get what is fairly mine. I worked 70-90 hours some weeks with no help from anyone in the company. I took that store from a money loser to one that was up by 15% in sales. I worked my but off and after I demanded my fair compensation, I was let go.
