My family took a vacation to the beach this memorial day, and we went into the nearby historic town of Southport. My children saw a horse and big white carriage offering rides around town. We decided to take the ride, and due to seating space, the driver said our older daughter could ride up front next to him. We took the ride. Later while we were eating the children were talking about the ride. The waitress asked us if it was the "white carriage ride" and I said yes. She then informed us that the man operating the carriage was a convicted sex offender! I was shocked. She told me the man's name and I was able to look him up on the N.C. Sex offender web page. I am so angry. Who has allowed this to happen? I have tried to call the city, but have not received a responce. I reported it to the police department - they said they would look into it. Now this is just unheard of. I will be contacting a lawyer, as I feel the city of Southport put my family at risk. This man's name is Eugene Rodney Melton, Jr. I would like to thank the waitress who told me his name and the information. Again, I am in SHOCK. I advise the city of Southport to check this man out, and remove him from the innocent public.
