Telemarketing Scam Reno

In February I received a call while I was shopping that stated I would received Walmart and Gas coupons if I would authorize a "free 10 day trial" of a variety of products. I was out shopping when the call came and distracted and somehow got hooked by the fast talking agent (something I don't normally do), and went through their whole speil. Of course, the package and coupons never came. I did try and call the numbers given to me by the agent to cancel, but had several issues and only cancelled 3 of the 4 products by phone after 3 days of effort. This cancellation by phone was also part of the scam, as my credit card was still billed. I ended up cancelling the credit card and reporting the scam to the credit card company.

Then today, 3 months later, I get a letter and a phone call from Discover Enterprises saying that my "magazine subscription" was not paid and they were the collection agency. The letter requested I send in my credit card number or bank routing/account number with a signature. Note that the letter did not mention the company I ordered the magazines from, nor the list of magazines I ordered. These people are gaining bank information via the email without cause. BE CAREFUL who you give your bank info to!

The phone call from Discover Agency was just as void of facts. She didn't know the name of the magazines I had ordered, and when I told her I hadn't received any magazines, she said they had been ordered by the company and therefore I had to pay the bill. She was very insistent, said they had me on voice record authorizing the payment, and the fact that I told her I did not order the magazines, or authorize the purchase or that I would not pay, she did not relent. I finally just hung up on her saying I would not pay the bill. Anyone comsumer that is too nice, or gullible, or afraid of authority would have succumbed to this telemarketing "collections" agent.

Do NOT be lured by these people. They are collecting personal information, and they are not legit.

Here is the letter I wrote and will send to Discover Enterprise today:

Dear Customer Service,

I received a letter today stating that a magazine account for $39.96 is currently past due. There is no mention of what the magazine account is, when it was ordered or what magazines are included in the supposed order. There is also no mention of the company that I supposedly made the order with, only that you are a collection agency.

Also today, I received a call from one of your agents saying that the same magazine account was past due and that the credit card it had been ordered on was cancelled. I asked her, What magazines did I order? And she listed about 10 magazines but, not stating that I had ordered them, but just a list of magazines I could have ordered - none of which I ordered, none of which I have ever received and most importantly, titles I would never order. I have only ordered a few magazines in my life and none of them were on the list she mentioned (all were titles geard towards female buyers).

I then asked when I supposedly ordered these magazines, and she stated in Februrary via the phone. I told her I did not remember ordering ANY magazines by phone, but asked if this one something bundled in some package deal. She said it was. I then told her that I remembered a call where I was promised a package that included information about all of these products, and a coupon for Walmart for $200 and a coupon for Gas, etc. This package never came. I remember that I insisted on the phone that the agent give me numbers to cancel the "subscriptions" as I was sensing a "Too Good to Be True" deal, and actually asked her several times if this was a legitimate offer - which of course, she assured me it was.

Of the four phone numbers that were given to me over the phone to cancel, only 3 worked.interestingly enough, it took three days before my name even was "registered" in their data banks. As if the computers wouldn't immediately show my order after authorization! I tried online to find the source for the 4th number, but had no luck.

I did find out on the internet that the phone call I had received, and the promises that were made about coupons for Walmart and gas, was a complete scam. I never received the package with the numbers to cancel, so luckily (or so I thought) I was able to cancel the subscriptions with the numbers that were given to me. Even though I cancelled, I had issues with the companies still charging my credit card, so I canceled the credit card.

I am not about to pay for a magazine subscription for magazines I never ordered especially when I did not received the initial package, did not have the proper phone numbers to cancel the order from the original sales person, do not have any guarantee that this company is legit, and the woman on the phone today could not even tell me what magazines I had ordered.

I looked up Discover Enterprises today online, and Google has several hits on Discover Enterprises as being a scam. So, I will report you to the Better Business Bureau, and you will not get a penny out of me. So, take me off your mailing list and your calling list and go do something honest and quit ripping people off.

PS: It's also interesting that your address is Reno, NV, but your letter was mailed from zip code 94531 which is in Antioch, CA near San Francisco; 203 miles away.
