Complaint / Review
Orbit Van Lines
Ripped Off Huge by Bait and Switch Tactic

A guy from the moving company (Golden Hand moving), which I thought it would be someone FROM "Orbit" but turned out to be someone subcontracted BY "Orbit", called me at the night right before the moving day saying he would charge me $0.75 per pound of household goods plus 17% of total charge for the fuel cost. He asked me if I would accept his offer or not, but what can I say when I didn't have much of other options, especially right before the moving day? I kept on referring to your estimate, but the guy wouldn't even listen to me as he did nothing but kept on repeating his offer. It was about 7 o'clock at night so there was no way I could reach Orbit too. Since I had to be back to Virginia before last Sunday I had no choice but to accept his offer. Most of all, I was not informed at least few days before that it would be someone not from Orbit that will be moving my stuff so I did not have chance to switch the moving company either. Now, when I received Orbit's estimate and decided to accept the offer, it was totally based on Orbit's ESTIMATE, not the charge rate offered by a guy from Golden Hand. Orbit's estimate was based on 3100 lbs and for less than actual 5000 lbs, paying more than 3 times your estimate is not reasonable at all.

The estimate Orbit sent me included cubic feet along with pounds and its estimated cost. For the estimated valume of 456 cf OR 3192 lbs, it would cost me $1,459, but the guy from Golden Hand moving told me it was WRONG. Now, if Orbit would subcontract someone, why would they pick one that wouldn't do the work for the rate that you offered to your customer? They forced me in a situation where I wouldn't have much options and then took a huge advantage of it all intentionally.

3. It would had been really nice if any of them (either Orbit or Golden Hand) if either of you let me know at least few days before moving day that there may be some extra charges for some services. For example, I know I let Orbit know I will have them move my 29 inch TV when I made a deposit of $250. However, what I didn't know was that the moving company would charge me extra $175 for my TV as a nonrefundable insurance fee. Also, certain items had to be wrapped, otherwise they just wouldn't even touch it, so I had the guys do the work for some extra charges. Why wasn't I given all these information at least few days BEFORE the moving day so that I could do some of the stuff on my own rather than paying some one to do for high cost? Why was I given all these information when the people actually came to pick up our stuff?

It was VERY HARD to discuss about the issues I have with them. I have sent them three emails, but not getting any response from them what so ever. I have called Orbit but they kept on saying there is no one who could answer my questions at the time of my call.

So I filed a complaint through Better Business Bureau (BBB) two days ago with all the detailed decription on what happened and they should be hearing something from BBB shortly.

I wanted to work this out with them but you are not leaving me any choice but going through a legal dispute.

If BBB can't work things out, I am prepared to file the dispute in the Small Claims Court and district attorney general also.

Even they may not be a big company, every business should have some dignity and credibility. "Bait and Switch" is definately not the way a company should treat your customer with.
