I received a letter in the mail from a company claiming to be Meridian Group, Inc. Out of Brooklyn, New York. The letter stated that this was my "Final International Home Improvement Grant Notification" and that I should respond immediately. Attached to this letter was a check made out to me in the amount of $4,650.76 that was said to pay the Foreign Access Taxes. Skeptically, I called the given number and was instructed to ask for 'George Hamilton' or 'Katie Hensley'. The man who answered the phone claimed to be George. This man then verified the amount of my check and asked me for information that was given on the letter. I was then given instructions as to what to do with the check I had received. I was instructed to deposit the check into my regular checking account and then send a money gram to a 'Rose Baldwin' as she would be my agent. George instructed me to send a red and white money gram to Rose at the address of 901 Drew St. Brooklyn, NY 11208 in the amount of $2997.00. He stated that the reasoning for this was legal fees pertaining to the rest of the money I would receive later. George also instructed me to write down the reference number from my money gram and contact him again once I had sent out the money to Rose. After speaking with this man, I checked whitepages.com and looked up the phone number to find that it was a cell phone located in Ajax-Pickering, Ontario. Also, the address of Meridian Group, Inc. That was on the letter only showed a P.O. Box which I found incredibly disturbing since this company was supposed to be the "Headquarters" for "Loss Prevention Management Center." I have contacted my own bank as to further action that can be taken against this kind of fraudulent activity.
