My husband and I purchased our home in November. We were told to keep both the Homestead and Mortgage Exemptions we would need to file for them with the country prior to March 31st. However, since our closing was in November we would need to give the county at least 30 days to obtain our information. We filed in February in 2008. However, because our home was unoccupied prior to our purchasing the Homestead Exemption fell off, even though we filed the tax exemption. It seems that the county works in arrears. When we contacted the county we were told that the title company, Metropolitan Title Company in Mishawaka, IN, was responsible for correctly calculating our payment. However, the title company calculated our county taxes with the two exemptions. Metropolitan Title Company refuses to take responsibility and pay for the deficit. We will end up losing our home because our taxes nearly doubled and we can not afford a $1400/month house payment.
