Aubrey M High (goes by Bree) and her boyfriend Chancelon Brent Hurst (goes by Chance) subleased my apartment in Santa Monica, CA for 10 days in early August after responding to an ad on Craigslist.
Agreed upon rate was $700 for the 10 day period, with payment due up front. Before they moved in Aubrey handed me a check for the full amount. I deposited it the next day, and found out that it bounced a few days later.
I confronted Aubrey about it and they sincerely (at least I thought it was sincere at the time) apologized citing a mistake, and swearing that the funds should be there since she was waiting on a large check to to deposited... And she wrote me another check that day.
Since they had already stayed in my apartment for a few days, I made them boht sign a promissory note with their intent to pay me for the stay, and took down both of their drivers license information and address and phone number, as well and license plate number to their vehicle.
Aubrey appeared to have talked to her bank in front of me (at this point I believe it was all a scam attempt) and once again guaranteed the second check.
Long story short, after they had both stayed the full 10 days in my apartment, I found out a few days later from my bank that the check had bounced once again due to insufficient funds (I was charged $35 each time).
Since then she was wasted tens of hours of my time with her lies and scam attempts.
She initially apologized and swore to get me the funds as soon as possible, then re-promised the payment over and over, always makign me wait at a public location then never showing up.
On one of her last scam attempts she went as far as to send an email from one of her email accounts pretending to be her brother, and making up a ridiculous sob story about why his sister was unable to pay... Which of course was all a lie.
Once I let her know once and for all that I was ready to contact the authorities she finally met up with me once and for all, promising that she would pay me half of the money right then and there, and put up a PS3 for collateral until she had the rest in a couple of weeks... instead she showed up with $160 and a nice looking camera that appeared to be real, but upon further inspection is all plastic and not worth a thing.
Since then she has avoided every attempt of mine to contact her, and changed her voicemail to say that she has recently fled CA and is moving to the Bellingham Washington area.
I have no clue whether or not this is true, above I listed her Ventura address because it was the one she initially gave me.
Aubrey is only 20 years old and is extremely naive so I initially felt a little bad for her and gave her some leniency, but since then it is beyond that point.
At this point what I would really like to know is what my best options are to recoup my money in the most efficient way that isn't going to waste 100 hours of my time... And obviously prosecute her. Given her past history I doubt that she would ever willfully show up for a court date, and I see how I could legally serve her anything when I don't know her location... So any other advice would be highly appreciated.
I called her phone from an anonymous number just last week and she answered the phone and then pretended that it wasn't her (though it obviously was), that's the last time I've heard anything from her after sending her many emails as well.
She is only 20 years old and appears to have never had a job or any type of schooling, so if anyone could find her parents information for me, that would also really help, most likely somewhere in the Ventura, CA area.
I spent some time online trying to find what I could about her or her boyfriend and there is not much, except for the two links below
