I was at my apt complex where soliticitation is not allowed but a seemingly friendly gentleman came to my door and said he was trying to go to Rome and needed "points" from selling magazines to go there, said he was a college student or something and asked if I was interested. I told him I really wasn't but he engaged in more converation, said I would get a "new and very cool" magazine called "Radar"... Ironically, it is their magazine with the most points! He took a check for $75 dollars, gave me a receipt with an address, phone number but something still did not seem right.
I called my bank and they said see if the magazines come within (he promised me a 2 month period) the time promised and talked me out of canceling the check saying it would cost basically half of the price. This was the end of May. The check was cashed early June. It is now almost the end of Sept. When I went to my bank they said I had to go to a notaty, that fraud is only covered for a certain amount of time and I was absolutely devastated when given a paper I now have to go get notorized and I may not even get my money back. I am so angry and feel this company is nothing but a scam and how can they get away with this. I did try to call the number on the receipt and all I got was a busy signal.
In hindsight, I shouldn't just taken a loss and canceled the check but my bank seemed fine when I called the 1-800 number given in telling me to wait the period out and then get in touch with them if the subscription did not come after the designated time period. I have learned my lesson but shouldn't have to this way. A company that represents themselves as an actual company with receipts and order numbers on them should not be allowed to get away with this and I am beyond upset over this matter!
