Just like many door-to-door magazine salespeople, this one was young, energetic, and polite. I chose my magazines, wrote my personal check, and off he went. My check was cashed, but the magazines never came. The contact information on the receipt is a dead end. Should the company name have been a tip off? As in, "Good luck tracking us down—it's easier to find the Lost Continent of Atlantis." Probably.
It was not my first time buying from a door-to-door magazine salesperson, just my first time being ripped off by one. The receipt, the salesperson's literature, credentials, and sales technique were all in line with what I had experienced before. The one thing that was "off" was the price. The magazines were considerably more expensive than I thought they should be. But hey, I'm helping this young person get to college right?
They are long gone with my money. Unfortunately, they only way to avoid such scams are to never accept solicitaions of any kind. If you want a magazine subscription, call the company.
