Erie Construction
Over priced Kitchen Remodel

Now, keep in mind that this happened back in 2005 and I am just now finding out about the whole deal.

Back in our neighbors where adding onto their house and somehow Erie Construction showed up on my parents doorstep to offer their services. Well, without informing me, she had them look over the kitchen and they quoted her new cabinets. See, I know a bit about construction and remodeling the old place as I have been doing it for many years now, but at this time, my mom wanted this done and she and I were not seeing eye-to-eye and she thought it was a good deal. She never sought a second or third quote from another company... Mistake.

Now this is how the new cabinets went... Full replacement on the base cabinets, new countertop, new back-splash, a single-stand-alone pantry cabinet (by the fridge) and, on the upper cabinets, new doors/fronts only.

Why? I don't know. Because my parents are really not into the knowing of how much things cost or what is the best way to do things, they went for it. The whole job took a week to do and, yes, it looks ok in the quality of work and materials but the price, I feel, is a bit extreme.

And as I have read in other reports here... There is NO itemized material/labor sheet, they signed the contracts on a Friday, gave only a (3) day termination period and charged well over $10,000.00 for this "partial" remodel. I could have done a complete remodel of the entire kitchen for that amount. Also, per other reports, my parents are both retired and in their 70's at the time this happened and, I feel, were taken advantage of by the "boys" of Erie Construction.

So as I mentioned, I am just now finding all this out. So I called the BBB of GR and unless there was an issue with the work or materials, there was really nothing that the BBB could investigate or file a report on. As they told me, the contractor has every right to charge what they see is proper for the job.

So... Beware of Erie and ALWAYS get at least a couple of quotes as well as check out Home Depot or Lowe's or wherever on the going cost range of materials/items for your project (s). Have an idea of how much things cost and how much you can afford and, as best you can, how much your project will end up costing you. Its buyer beware — and with Erie Construction out there — it can be very hard to do if you are like my folks.
