Interview Process: Door-to-Door Sales Through Decrepit Neighborhoods During "Second Interview"

Before I begin I would like to briefly explain what Get Worldwide Inc. Is.in short, Get Worldwide Inc. Is a marketing firm headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio with several franchises throughout the country. Basically, businesses hire Get Worldwide Inc. To increase their customer volume, which generally results in GWW employees participating in direct sales for the client.

Now on to my experience...

I came across a posting for an entry level sales position with GWW on jobs. Cleveland.com. It appeared to be something that might be worth getting more information on, so I submitted my resume along with a cover letter expressing my interest in the position. I was skeptical about marketing firms in general due to the numerous negative reports I had read in the past. However, after failing to find any negative information on GWW as well as visiting their website, which seemed relatively legitimate, I decided to take them up on their invitation for an initial interview.

After the first interview I knew this company was exactly what I had feared. The interview lasted no longer than 15 minutes, and did not involve any questions that tested my aptitude, integrity, competence, or overall suitability for the job. It ended with an offer for a second interview that was to take place the following day from 11am to 8pm. He said they like their candidates to spend a full working day there so they can obtain a solid understanding of what the job is like before they decide to accept the position.

I originally had no intention of attending this second interview, but when I woke up the next morning I was feeling rather open-minded and thought; what the hell... It'll give me a chance to see what these marketing firms are all about... I have nothing to lose by just showing up... And I don't have to stay the full 9 hours, I can just leave when I decide that I've had enough, right? WRONG.

Immediately upon my arrival I was paired up with a present GWW employee (Tim), as were all the other candidates. Then with the urgency as if a bomb was about to go off in the building, we were escorted out to the parking lot and into the cars of the current employees. Joining us in Tim's car was another employee/candidate pair as well as an employee in training (who, by the way, had both the face and the IQ of a goldfish). I asked where we were going and in so many words I was told; youll find out.

On the way to our then undisclosed location the current employees continued to BS about various aspects of the company until we finally pulled over in a very low-income residential area. It was then that we were told we would be going door-to-door selling various home improvement projects (i.E. New window and siding installation etc.) for a client until 8pm.

After 4 hours of ignoring NO SOLICITING signs, having doors slammed in our faces, and one man threatening to shoot us, we went to Burger King for a lunch break. Now that we were finally back in the vicinity of the car I informed Tim that I was not interested in employment with GWW and would like to be taken back to the office. He responded by explaining that he could not take me back because (a) he had to stay in the area to continue training goldfish boy and (b) he would get in trouble if his manager caught him letting me go early. I was left with no choice but to stay at Burger King where I am now writing this report while waiting for my cab to pick me up and give me what is going to be a $30 ride back to the Get Worldwide Inc. Office.

So, prospective employees and applicants of Get Worldwide Inc., hopefully you encounter this posting before you find yourself stranded at a Burger King or wondering around a poor, decrepit, neighborhood until after dark.
