I was interviewed and hired on my birthday, april 30 the district manager, Dave Swanger and his assistant, Gerald Thomas, made me tons of promises and a false impression of the company, down to telling me actual lies about the companies health insurance policy, vaction policy ect.
In the interview I provided them with a letter from my doctor stating that I am handicapped with certain restrictions and they signed it and put it in my "file" (I kept a signed copy)
they sent me to a Gastonia area store to train, under the guise that I would be there only Four weeks and then be sent to the store near my home, as they knew that medically i could not continue to drive TWO HOURS each way (yes, four hours a day) to work.
While at that store a witnessed the manager racially discriminating her employees. (I and she are white, The employees in question were two nice african-american ladies) I helped them save thier jobs be filing complaints against her and she was terminated. I at that time after my pitiful three weeks of training was asked to go to the shelby store as store manager, I told them I could not physically do all that driving, but they said if I could go there for a couple of weeks and hire a new manager and assistant, then I could be reassigned to my town.
After being sent there I was abused, harrassed and humiliated by members of upper managment, It became apparant that I was never going to be sent to the Marion store, I was even cheated out of my medical benifits by the DM who told me it was "too Bad" and that they didnt need handicapped people running up the cost of insurance and even made a crack about how he thought it was wrong that "young people like me" "took advantage" of handicapped parking, insinuating that it wasnt nessasary for me.
They had me work 80 or more hours a week, plus the drive and then called me into the office to have a "discussion" with me about cheating them out of payroll! They said i wasnt working enough!
And then, The next week, I got sick and had to go to the hospital where I found out that I had a tumour and needed surgery, the DM asked me if I could put it off for a few months and get back to work that day!!!
I couldnt take it, so I typed up a letter saying that if they could not accomodate my illness that I had to resign and they said no, so I left... And today, I didnt get my last paycheck! The DM said I didnt deserve it because I spent most of my last week pretending to be sick, so I didnt really earn it!
I hate Family Dollar, they are cruel to thier employees, just trying to save themselves money. I cant believe i put myself through all that for what little bit of money they paid me.
