Sold a very sick puppy Blatantly Breaking NJ State Law ripoff

My family recently bought an eight week old Chihuahua puppy from Pet Paradise. I know that I should never have even gone in there. I know what they are about however my emotions got the better of me and I went ahead with the purchase of this puppy. I am actually ashamed that I participated in this puppy mill market but I feel that I might be able to help put an end to these atrocities by telling my story.

When I went to pay for the puppy I was baraged with a stack of papers that needed to be signed. Contracts, warranties, etc. I was told that "Pet Paradise had the best health warranty in the business". They showed me the NJ Lemon Law for Puppies and explained how that worked. Sounded so safe. I was told that the puppy had only been in their store for 24 hrs. But I needed to purchase the food that she had been eating because it was not healthy to switch food so quickly.

I tried to argue with this ridiculous statement but that was their policy and I absolutely could not have the dog if I didnt buy this food. It happened to be Puppy Food for the Puppy Lovers Soul. I found it very interesting that that food is not sold at any of the large pet chain stores. I guess I would have to go back to Pet Paradise to get more when I ran out! I had to buy a crate from them as well. Couldnt buy the puppy if I didnt.

I was told how important it was to make sure the puppy ate. Force feed her if necessary. They gave me Gerber banana baby food to feed her! Dogs eat fruit? I was told how important it was to get her to a vet to have her checked, I could use their veterinarian for free... Or mine. It was mentioned that she might get a "cold", most puppies do... Could she be referring to kennel cough? And if my vet wanted to prescribe antibiotics then make sure they give her a strong one. Such as doxycycline.

I asked her if she was a vet. She said no but from her experience vets will treat with "weak" antibiotics so that they can keep having you back and make money on you. Vets dont give doxycycline to small puppies. They are completely incompetent and misinformed.

At this point I realized that there were many red flags and maybe I should just walk out but I was already attached and so was my 11 yr old daughter. I realized that it might be a rough go with our new puppy but I didnt want to leave her at that store.

We took her to my vet the next day. She appeared healthy but I was told to watch her very carefully because she could still be incubating something.

Two days later she was coughing terribly had green nasal and eye discharge, wasn't eating and was lethargic. We had her examined and radiographs were done. She was diagnosed with pneumonia. We admitted her to Red Bank Veterinary Hospital. We were told how critical her condition was and that this was a day by day thing. After immeasurable worry and a 1600. Vet bill she was discharged.

It was explained that she would need intensive nursing care at home and might go down hill at any time over the next few weeks. She was on two antibiotics one of which I had to wear gloves to administer to the puppy. I wonder if that would have been considered strong enough for Pet Paradise?!

During this time we documented everything, obtained an unfit for sale cetificate and followed the reporting procedure to a "t". We sent everything certified mail. We hand delivered the papers. We faxed the papers. Pet Paradise has a pet warranty company that they use to cover the first thousand dollars of medical bills. I still havnt figured out why they would use this sort of thing. Its not insurance. They do tell you to send everything to this company immediately. Not them. How interesting.

Maybe they are waiting for the 14 day period to elapse.in any case we sent the paperwork to both places. I did notice that the person who signed for the paperwork at Pet Paradise was the same person who signed for the paperwork at the Pet Guardian company. I would assume that they are the same company.

They denied knowing anything about this. They played dumb. Which is exactly what they did every time that we called to see where our refund was. It has been over thirty days since it was submitted. They are using every delay tactic know to man. And the owner also explained to me that since I signed the pet warranty contract it cancels my consumer protection from the NJ Puppy Lemon Law. So basically they dont need to follow the law.

This is absolutely incorrect. They have blatantly broken the law. When I told them I was going to file a complaint with the divsion of Consumer Affairs they encouraged me to do so. Up to this point I have not received one cent back. I have been hung up on twice by Pet Paradise employees.

My puppy was diagnosed with pneumonia, but also had fleas and tapeworm. I have read other recent complaints on Pet Paradise and noticed that other puppies sold there have also contracted pneumonia. It is not out of the realm of possibility that all those puppys having been exposed could be harboring this disease and passing it to other dogs when brought to their new home. As well as issuing a complaint to the division of consumer affairs in NJ I am also in the process of contacting the health department.

Once again, I am embarassed that I took part in perpetuating the puppy mill business. I hope that my story will help in putting and end to Pet Paradise and their unethical business practices and inform any future customers they might have.

I am so lucky to have saved my puppy, Gracie. She is in a loving home and very happy. It is just disgusting what is going on at Pet Paradise.
