On Labor Day around 6:30 P.M. I got a call from a unknown name and number, normally I donot answer calls from people like that b/c I am on the donot call list. Just so happened that day I did.
Well i was not thinking anything about it was labor day, just another day for us. As i pick up the phone a guy from the other end answers and tells me he was from the government grant information center, and I had $8000.00 waiting on me and there where also 9,999 more people in this state that could receive it. Never have to pay it back. Never have to pay taxes on it or nothing. Sounded pretty good but i knew it was not true. He had a india accent but that kind of accent is getting real popular these days. Didn't think much about that either.
I thought for a moment and started to hang up the phone but he said my real name and i started thinking how did he get that along with the bank info he had. So i asked him how he got all this info. He said i told you i am from the government grant center. I ask him for his name he told me his name was Jo Brown and gave a job id #EP45050. So I told him this is not true it is a scam he said no way i will let you talk to my manager so i did, his name was Simon Jones. So i listened for awhile and kept arguing with him trying to find out how he got my info. And all he would ever tell me is you are a taxpaper you are entitled to this money all i need is your S.S.# he already had the rest. I never gave him a S.S.# i hung up the phone he called back and said we must have got disconnected, i told him no i hung up and told him not to call anymore.
Well he kept on telling me that the office was in freemont Ca. And the address was 163 Apple Street. And they were going to send out some legal papers for me to sign and return by Sept 15th and they would put the money into my account and i could just give them the s.S. # then when i signed the paper work.By the way i was suppose to got that paper work in the mail today 09/06 i didn't get anything. I also kept asking for a phone number and he kept telling me i am going to give it to you in just a moment. First i will need you to also pay 279.95 for filing fees and all. I said no i have no money and want have any by the 15th he said no problem we will get it later. He also said we don't want your debit or credit card info. Not even a check # all we need is your s.S. # he never got that from me either.
He sent me over to the recording and told me you will here some scratching noise we are have weather or technical problems. Answer all the questions with a yes and they will give you the # and all that. Well all i heard was scratching and someone just saying say yes say yes. All i really got out of that was something about American Financial 10-5 and a verification # of 4770520 and he told me i would talk back with him and i waited for like 5 min. And all it kept telling me was a verification #.
I never recieved a call back # or still don't know how he got my info. Pretty Scary. I got on the internet that night and looked for the information tried looking up the address there was no address. I even called the Police department there in Freemont Ca. They told me no address or the zip, it was a Scam. Also he told me that there was another office in Utah.
I talked to my bank and they said they would watch my account and let me know of anything.
That night Sept. 5th 2006 i was reading about Freemont Ca. Scams from Gov. Grant Centers and read that they electonically get there money and the bank can't stop that. So today sept. 6th 2006 we just opened a new acount and will have to start all over. The bank said they could have gotten our info from anywhere which we knew that. But all we can do is try and help otjer people, so please be very very careful who you send checks to or anything that has to do with your bank info.
We are still hoping that these crooks will get caught and be put away forever. We are christian people and we couldn't believe that something like this would ever happen to us. But I did and it is not a good thing. We hope we will get everything fixed back by our bank before they try to get any money. Please just watch your info. We pray it will not happen to you or anyone else.
