My son recently applied for a FAFSA grant and a few days later we got a call from someone identifying himself as Andrew Williams. Mr. Williams said he was calling from the Government Grant Association and that we were eligible to receive a 5000.00 grant. My son took the call originally and thought this was related to his recent application for financial aid. Am I glad he didn't have any account information to give this con artist! He told the man to call back after I got home.
Mr. Williams asked for my bank account number right away and told me the money would be deposited into my account. He already knew my name and address, and my son told me that he was told the money was for school. So apparently this so-called company knew we had applied for aid.
I asked Mr. Williams several questions, none of which he wanted to answer. When asked where the grant was coming from, he stated "from the State". I asked which state. He responded "Maryland". Since he had already given me a Utah address for his company, I asked him why he was calling me from Utah to offer me a grant from Maryland? He only stuttered and went into his spiel again. I also told him that if the state of Maryland wanted to give me a grant for my son's education, I am sure they would send me something in writing on official letter-head. He insisted that I give him my account information. I told him he was stupid and that I would be reporting this phone call to the Maryland State's Attorney's Office. He hung up.
After seeing this site, I've read that some persons have actually lost money to these criminals. I do pray that you are able to recover the money and that these crooks are apprehended.
