On May 11, I got a phone call after 5pm and waas told I won a bonus from the magazine I subscribe to and would be receiving additional magazines free for six months. I was put on with a "supervisor" who told me that he needed me to confirm my credit card number. "For what? I don't give my credit card number out over the phone, especially to someone who is calling me, " I told him. He then told me that he already has my credit card number, he just needs me to confirm it to make sure that it is valid. When I insisted that I would not be giving him the number he got belligerent and told me he was going to charge my card the full amount and hung up on me.
I immediately called the number back and got a message to leave my phone number for the "do not call list, " to which I added that I have a lawyer and I would be contacting the BBB and informing them of the company's unscrupulous business practices. I would also be contacting my credit card and letting them know about unauthorized and fraudulent charges that may turn up on my account (they checked my account and I hadn't had a charge—they also changed my account number).
I usually make it a point to not talk to telemarketers, but they made it sound as if it were my magazine subscription company.
